Isle of Wight skeleton athlete Kimberley Murray is celebrating a strong performance in the Igls World Cup, which saw her secure 8th overall and set a new track record.
Kim’s year didn’t get off to a strong start in La Plagne, France meaning she had a lot of work to do ahead of this week’s event in Austria.
The focused training and determination certainly paid off as Kim secured an 8th place finish at Igls on Friday, just 1 spot off her personal best finish of 7th in Calgary last year.

After the first run Kim was sitting an acceptable 16th overall but picked up an incredible 8 spots following her second run in a time of 53.70s – a new track record! The record was previously held by Tina Hermann, a German athlete and the current World Champion who set the record back in 2016.
Sadly, the record was short lived as it was soon broken by the eventual event winner Jaqueline Lolling – the 2018 Olympic silver medallist. That said, Kim is still the third fastest person ever to have completed the course showing the potential Kim has in the World Cup and potentially at the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.
Speaking about her positive week, Kim says:
“This result means the world to me because it has been a difficult and disappointing season so far. I have been waiting for sliding to click this year and it’s a massive relief to have got this result in a World Class field.

“To achieve a track record took me completely by surprise and I’ll never forget that run, it was the best of my career so far. I’m proud of myself and the whole team, it’s been a great confidence boost just when I needed it.
“I am now leaving the World Cup circuit to race on the Inter-Continental Cup (ICC) in Lake Placid where I have a double race on Thursday and Friday (23rd-24th January) and I am hoping to take this momentum with me and perform well.
“It remains my target to compete in Altenberg at the World Championships in March”.
